More and more companies are finding applications for augmented reality in business, but its full potential has not yet to be fully exploited. The entertainment and gaming sector is the most eager to use it, but we can already find companies from other sectors on the market, including the healthcare sector. In this article, we have gathered both obvious and surprising examples of using augmented reality.
Augmented Reality in Entertainment
Brands are enhancing cinematic experiences with interactive tools to engage viewers more. Disney has released an AR-enabled short film called Remembering, which viewers can watch on their iOS devices by scanning codes from the film for an extended version.
This is the first AR app that connects directly to content on the Disney+ platform, testing AR’s ability to improve storytelling from home. Disney’s Marvel World of Heroes, an AR mobile game, will also launch in 2023, enabling players to create superheroes and fight villains, with in-game experiences reflecting each player’s physical location.

At a Goldman Sachs conference in September 2022, Electronic Arts (EA) CEO Andrew Wilson spoke about the company’s plan to invest more in creation and engage players. He also expressed confidence in EA’s 20% gamer-created content, which is used by 50% of its player base, and its unique opportunity to deliver the future of entertainment.

Augmented Reality and pets
Catriona Campbell, an AI expert from the UK, envisions the creation of virtual children in the metaverse in the next 50 years. These virtual newborns will resemble their “parents” and be capable of playing and interacting within their digital environment. Campbell believes that consumers who grew up with Tamagotchi pets will embrace this technology. As many younger generations reconsider having families, this may attract a new generation of digital caretakers. The Petaverse Network, developed by Tiny Rebel Games, will launch its first generation of cats directly on Ethereum in early 2023. The Digital Pets Company has created digital 3D dogs that are authenticated as NFTs using AI technology. Owners can care for and interact with their virtual pets across various virtual and augmented reality platforms as well as mobile and web browsers.

Augmented Reality in Tourism and Hospitality
Moxy Hotels, a part of Marriott International, introduced the Moxy Universe, Play Beyond AR experience in July 2022, which enabled visitors to create their own avatars and take part in AR challenges that were spread throughout the hotel. The avatars could interact with visitors while they were in the hotel bar, private rooms, or gym. This experience was available at 12 Moxy Hotels across the Asia-Pacific region from July to December 2022. Meanwhile, Brown & Hudson, a luxury travel company, is providing meta travel experiences to its high-net-worth clients through their new metaverse collection. Capo is a part of this collection that allows clients to revisit their previous trips in the metaverse using virtual reality capabilities. A videographer captures their real-life experiences, allowing them to relive their memories in a more immersive way than simply looking at photos. This enables them to continue exploring and enjoying their experiences long after their trip has ended.
